The Specialist Kitchen Design Company
My name is Kate and I run 102 Interiors, this is the back ground of how the company started and the ethos behind the way we work....
I am a working mother of four living in South East London. In 2000 I started a property company with my husband taking unloved and poorly maintained flats, completely redesigning the layout, renovating them to a high standard and letting them to young professionals. The kitchens and bathrooms were small, dark and impractical when we first get our hands on them and I relished the challenge of making them beautiful, light and workable spaces.
During this time I have advised my friends and family when they were embarking on a home improvement project and empathised with their frustrations when things weren't running as smoothly as they would like. Often costs crept up and sometimes there was a feeling that, while the builder is a lovely guy, he was not being as open about the final cost as they really would like.
Frustrations like workmen smoking outside the bedroom windows or not cleaning up at the end of a build can feel petty and sometimes difficult to bring up in the grand scheme of things. My hairdresser was told by his builder that he would be responsible for buying the floor for his bathroom. He confided in me that he didn't know exactly how much flooring he was to buy, what types of flooring were suitable and whether he was responsible for buying the adhesive. He didn't go ahead with the work at the time and has now asked me to it.
In 2011, while helping a friend buy her kitchen, I realised that I really enjoy designing and installing kitchens and I want to do more. I know how working families and young professionals live and what they need from these rooms in practical terms. I also know how important the 'oooo I love my kitchen' factor is. Considerations like having a socket near the table, so that small children don't have to negotiate laptop cables, and near the hob, so that hand held blenders can be used to make soup, don't always occur to the average builder.
When renovating my loft and basement I used an architect and his contractors. There were often men on site I didn't recognise, but assumed that they were part of the team. Subsequently we discovered that things had gone missing, nothing personal or valuable but it was still upsetting. So all of my people wear the company t-shirt to ensure that they are easily identifiable as working for 102Interiors.
I will complete costing, detailed project plans and highlight potential problems so that my clients know exactly what is going on at any given time, and how much it is going to cost at the end.
Also I will be approachable so that when there are issues I'm not aware of my clients feel comfortable talking to me about it.
I want to take the stress out of renovations after all, as my small son says, "It’s not rocket surgery!".
